KLEINWACHTER CPM374 CHARGED PLATE MONITOR
with integrated Electro-Fieldmeter
SYSTEM PROF. DR. ING. HANS KLEINW?CHTER

The CHARGE PLATE Monitor 374 measures the voltage potential on its integrated Plate-Electrode according the Fieldmill-Influence-Principal and is suitable to determine the Static Decay Time from a selected higher voltage threshold to a lower voltage threshold level.

CPM374
Forschungs-. Entwlcklungs-. Produktlons-u. Vertrlebsges.m.b.H

The CHARGE PLATE Monitor CPM374 consists of an integrated timer, a high-voltage unit and an electro-fieldmill-sensor and achieves therefore the high impedance of 10
15 W to measure electrostatic voltage potentials and static decay times of air ionizer equipment.

The unit meets the requirements of the Standard IEC 61340-5-1 and the American Standard EOS/ESD S.3.1.

For the vertical measurement use the included three Distance pieces. Screw them on the backside of the unit.

Important: The high voltage unit is protected by a high ohmic current limiting resistor and therefore there is no danger when touching the charged plate.

The CPM374 is battery powered and due to its compact design, it is very suitable for the use in industrial areas. It can also be operated at a power supply (230/115 VAC). The CPM374 is menu-driven and will be controlled by means of 2 switches for simple operation. All selected parameters will be shown in the 2 rows LCD-display for a better orientation of the operator.

The enclosed software enables the remote control operation of the CPM374 and data processing by means of a PC.

2.1  Switching on
The CHARGE PLATE Monitor CPM374 is equipped with a NiCd-battery and ready for operation - use the enclosed power supply only to charge the battery. The display background illumination is not operating when battery powered. The battery operation features an automatic switch-off function, if the switches were not touched for
approximay 10 minutes. when the unit is run on the power supply (230/115 VAC) the background illumination is switched on while the automatic switch-off function is disabled.

Press button B to switch on the CPM374.

1.  Description
2.  Operation
2.2  Decay Time and Offset Voltage

The software version will be shown shortly before the measurement mode and the command to initiate the measurement appear on the display:

DECAY TIME: AUTO
PRESS START!

The initially setting is saved in the EEPROM and will be shown after each switch-on.

If the auto-mode is selected, as indicated in the example above, then the time will be measured for the positive voltage decay first and then followed automatically for the negative. This mode is recommended for checking air ionizer equipment, as the Startbutton has to be pushed on time only to perform a complete check of ionizers including the determination of the Offset Voltage.

Offset-Voltage is the voltage potential, which remains after a certain time on the plate electrode. It is an indication for the balance of positive and negative ions. If the Offset- Voltage is positive, then an excess of positive ions emanate from the ionizer equipment - the other way round for negative. Please consider the specification of the ionizer for a qualified evaluation.

The Start-button has to be pressed in order to charge the plate-electrode by means of the integrated high-voltage unit. The timer setting and the applied voltage potential are shown on the display:

TIMER: 1000-100V
U = XXXXV

The timer starts as soon as the upper threshold value (1000 volt in this case) is passed:

TIMER=XX.Xs
U = XXXXV

and will stop the decay time when reaching the lower value (100 volt). The voltage setting for the timer could be changed in the set-up function.

The offset-voltage will be measured after a certain lapse time at the end of the static decay time measurement:
OFFSET=XXXs
U = XXXXV

The measurement series is now finished and all relevant parameters can be obtained from the display, e.g. to qualify an air ionizer equipment. The offset-voltage UOFF and the belonging lapse time will be finally displayed in the first row for 10 seconds or until a new measurement was initiated by pressing button A.

 The decay time appears in the second row as POS DECAY or as NEG DECAY or both  alternating every second, if the auto-mode was pre-selected:

UOFF=XXXV T=XXXs
POS.DECAY =XX.Xs

2.3  Saving measurement values
The measured values can be saved in the internal memory, therefore the request will follow after each measurement accordingly:
SAVE VALUES?
A<YES NO>B

press the button A to start the saving. In case that the memory is full (99 entries), the display will indicate for approximay 2 seconds:

MEMORY FULL!

All files have to be deleted in order to perform the saving of the last measurement: The following request will appear on the screen:
DELETE FILES?
A<YES NO>B

In case, that the full memory should not be deleted, please press B and the unit will be ready to take the next measurement - the last measurement results will disappear and cannot be saved.

Important: It is recommended to transfer all files to your PC after each measurement interval by means of the enclosed software. Thus will allow to delete files of
the CPM374 at the next measurement interval without loosing important data.

Press A to delete the full memory of the CPM374 and the proposal for the file number of the last measurement will appear:

FILE NO: XX
A<OK CHANGE>B

Press A to confirm this file number or change with each press of B until you reach the right file number. Finally, press A to confirm the right file number.
In order to reach faster a certain file number press B, then the ten digit can be changed by pressing A while the single digit can be changed with B. when you have reached the right file number, wait for approximay 3 seconds until the display change back as stated above and confirm the setting by pressing A.

Press A and B simultaneously to start the set-up function. The CPM374 will ask for performing the set-up function:
SET-UP ?
A<YES NO>B

3.1  SET-UP
If the set-up function was started, the last Static Decay and Offset setting will appear (in this case Mode = Auto), which can be confirmed again by pressing A:
MODE = AUTO
A<OK CHANGE>B

If B will be pressed, the following options are shown one after the other:
MODE = POS
MODE = NEG
MODE = VOLTMETER
MODE = AUTO

The decay time for only positive respectively negative potentials with the following offset voltage are measured in the MODE = POS and MODE = NEG. In the MODE =
VOLTMETER, the CPM374 will measure permanently the voltage potential on the plate electrode - Use a measurement lead connected to the plate electrode to operate the
CPM374 as an Electrometer (High Impedance Voltmeter), e.g. monitoring the change of voltage potential on human bodies, caused by movements.

If you have selected the decay time measurement (MODE = POS, MODE = NEG or MODE = AUTO), the starting point for the voltage potential, from where on the decay time
should be measured, will be asked first:
START: U=1000V
A<OK CHANGE>B

Press A to confirm the proposed starting point. If B will be pressed, the following options are shown one after the other:
500V - 550V - ... - 900V - 950V - 1000V - 500V

and the selected value has to be confirmed by pressing A .

3.  SET-UP Function
The same procedure will follow selecting the stop point, that means at which potential the decay time should be stopped:
STOP: U=100V
A<OK CHANGE>B

Press A to confirm the proposed stop point. If B will be pressed, the following options are shown one after the other:
0V - 50V - 100V - ... -400V - 450V - 500V - 0V

and the selected value has to be confirmed by pressing A .
Finally, the CPM 374 will ask for the lapse time to determine the offset voltage:
OFFSET: XXXs
A<OK CHANGE>B

Press A to confirm the proposed lapse time. If B will be pressed, the following options are shown one after the other:
10s - 20s - ... - 50s - 1min - 2min- ... - 10min - 10s

and the selected value has to be confirmed by pressing A  .
The chosen parameters for Start, Stop and Offset will be shown for approximay 3 sec,
e.g.:
TIMER: 1000-100V
OFFSET: XXXs

and finally the unit will recheck if all parameters are chosen correctly:
TIMER+OFFSET OK?
A<YES NO>B

The selected parameters will be confirmed by pressing A and could be changed again with B.
When A was pressed, the unit will ask for clearing the memory, as the stored data files are based on the previous setting:
CLEAR MEMORY?
A<YES NO>B

If B was pressed, the previous setting will remain the same, the memory was not deleted and the new parameter change is ignored, the following message will appear:
 PARAMETER
NOT CHANGED !

If A was pressed, then following message will advice that the parameter change was taken over and the memory is cleared accordingly, the following message will appear for approximay 2 sec:
PARAMETER
CHANGED !

The display will show now the new decay time setting and the request to press start!

3.2  Calibration
If NO>B was chosen for the set-up function, the unit will ask for the Electro-Fieldmeter calibration:
EFM CALIBRATION?
A<YES NO>B

Press B if a calibration is not required. Press A to initiate the automatic offset calibration, the following message will appear for approximay 1 sec:
PLEASE WAIT
CALIBRATION

Important: The plate electrode must be free of foreign voltage connection during calibration.

The display will show the new decay time setting and the request to press start!

If the electrofield-meter is defected, the following message will appear:
EFM DEFECT!
REPAIR IS NEEDED

If the power of the NiCd Battery is less than 6,7 volts, the unit will provide the following message alternating every second with the actual first row:

LOW BATTERY!

4.  Other messages on the display
The battery has to be recharged, but the ongoing or the upcoming measurement could be finished first.

Important:
Please use the enclosed battery charger only for charging the batteries. The batteries will also be charged when the CPM374 is switched off. The max. charging time is 14 hours, but the unit could be longer connected to the battery charger as it consists of a charging control device. It is recommended to use the CPM374 until LOW BATTERY! appears on screen. This will maintain the max. battery capacitance over a longer period.

If the battery voltage will become less than 6,1 volts, the following message will appear on screen for approximay 2 seconds:
AUTO OFF
LOW BATTERY!

and the unit will switch off automatically to prevent a total discharge of the battery. A total discharge can cause damage or destroy the battery!

9.  Parts of Delivery

The measurement unit is not approved for the use in explosive areas!
The unit is not approved for the use in power utilities!
This unit is not suitable to measure alternating fields with a frequency higher than 1 Hz.
Sparking discharge to the electro-fieldmill-sensor has to be avoided.

The Teflon-supports of the plate electrode must be maintained clean, therefore do not touch with fingers. All Teflon spacers and the teflonisolated wire to the plate have to be cleaned carefully with Acetone or similar solvents in case that the voltage on the charged plate drops in a rate of greater than 100V / minute under normal circumstances (no external lead connection to the plate electrode and no presence of air ionizers). The interval for factory calibration is normally 1 year.

Please note the following advice when checking air ionizers:
The presence of charged objects as well as personnel could cause failure on the measurement results caused by influence of voltage. The unit should be therefore always
grounded to avoid this phenomena from the housing of the unit itself.
